Do you need insurance for your toys?
If you own cars and a home, you might also have an RV, boat, or motorcycle (or maybe all of the above; if that’s the case, we’d love to hang out). They have unique coverage needs, which is why they have specialized policies. There are a few things to think about, including one coverage nobody should be without.
-
RVs, boats, golf carts, and motorcycles are different from cars
Your auto insurance policy might not be the right fit for these valuable assets. Your RV has a lot more unique features than a standard vehicle, and finding the proper coverage is important. Motorcycle riders often disregard the important need for insurance. However, they can be held financially responsible if charged with negligence in a motorcycle crash. Boats can be expensive, and they are at high risk for accidents and damage from weather-related disasters. Specialty policies have unique protections built in for the unique needs of each. And don’t forget your golf cart coverage: home insurance and condo insurance policies also have strict guidelines and exclusions for golf cart liability and physical damage coverage.
-
If you have a classic car, your auto policy isn’t right for that, either
Classic cars can be worth a lot of money, and usually their high valuations are due to the desirability of the car and their irreplaceable nature. Standard auto policies might not be a “perfect fit” for your “perfect car.”
-
Umbrella and excess liability coverage
These policies go above and beyond your other insurance coverage’s liability limits. If someone were to injure themselves in your home, your homeowners policy has a maximum liability limit available to protect you in a lawsuit. But what if those costs were more than your policy covered? That’s when an umbrella kicks in. It’s a great safety blanket to have, and it’s fairly inexpensive, too.
Classic and collector cars
A standard auto policy is not a perfect fit for a perfect car
Ask us what yours would be worth under the policy you have now, and what a collector policy would agree to in writing before anything happens to it.
A closer look
On the water
Homeowners policies do include a small amount of watercraft coverage, and it is genuinely small: typically limited to modest boats with limited horsepower, with narrow liability, and often only while the boat is on your property. For anything you would actually take out into the Gulf, it is not a substitute for a boat policy.
Two clauses to check specifically. Navigational limits define where you are covered, including how far offshore and whether the Keys or the Bahamas are inside or outside the box. And named-storm haul-out provisions may require you to take specific steps before a storm, and may reimburse part of the cost of doing so.
One more question worth asking: agreed value settles at a figure written into the policy, while actual cash value deducts depreciation at claim time. On an older boat that gap can be very large.
Ask us about
- Where your navigational limits actually end
- Whether your policy is agreed value or actual cash value
- What your named-storm haul-out clause requires of you
- Whether wreck removal and fuel spill liability are included
- Coverage while the boat is on the trailer or in dry storage
- Uninsured boater coverage, which works like uninsured motorist
On the road, and off it
RVs, ATVs and golf carts
Motorhomes and travel trailers
A motorhome needs auto-style liability and physical damage, plus coverage for the contents and attached equipment that make it a home. Two coverages people miss: vacation liability, which covers you while parked and in use as a residence, and full-timer liability, if you live in it rather than holiday in it.
ATVs, UTVs and dirt bikes
Homeowners policies frequently exclude off-road vehicles once they leave your property, and sometimes on it. Given how these are actually used, on trails, on other people’s land, with other people riding, liability is the coverage that matters most, ahead of physical damage.
Golf carts and low-speed vehicles
Very common in Lee County communities, and a genuinely grey area. Whether your home policy responds can depend on where the cart is, who is driving, and whether it has been modified. A street-legal low-speed vehicle is a different question again. Tell us how yours is actually used.
Questions we get weekly
Specialty coverage questions, answered straight
Is my boat covered by my homeowners policy?
Possibly, to a very limited degree, and usually only for small, low-horsepower craft with narrow liability. Check the actual sub-limit on your policy before relying on it. For most boats in Southwest Florida it is not adequate.
Do I need boat coverage year-round if I only use it in season?
Most owners keep coverage continuously, because much of the exposure includes storage, theft, fire and storm damage while the boat sits. Some policies offer reduced lay-up rates for defined out-of-season periods.
My RV is parked most of the year. Can I reduce coverage?
There are usually storage or suspension options, but parked does not mean risk free, and a suspended policy will not respond to a storm, a fire or a theft.
How much umbrella coverage should I carry?
The usual starting point is enough to protect what you have and what you are likely to earn. Carriers also require specified minimum liability limits on the underlying home and auto policies before they will write the umbrella, so it tends to become a conversation about the whole household.
Can you write all of these alongside my home and auto?
Usually yes, and often with the same carrier where that produces a better result. Being independent means we can also split them across carriers if that turns out to be the better answer for you.
General information, not advice about your policy. Coverage definitions, exclusions, deductibles, eligibility and availability vary by carrier, by policy form and by property, and they change over time.
